Learning About Hundertwasser

This term for visual art we looked at Hundertwasser's art works to give us ideas. He was German (his name means 100 drops of water). His drawings were messy but amazing. They were wonderfully colourful and crooked. His trees looked like swirly lollipops. Hundertwasser was also an architect who designed crooked houses and apartments. It is most interesting that he designed the Kawakawa toilets. They walls of the toilets are cracked and decorated. From the outside you can see wine bottles in the walls, and onion tops on the pillars.

Hundertwasser loved crooked lines. He said he cursed straight lines!

Fog Poem

Angus wrote this poem during a wet morning tea time. He was inspired by two other poems about fog, including Carl Sandburg's poem which compares the fog to a a creeping cat.

Fog

Wrapping around you like a blanket,
Haunting people because it is a ghost.
With no colours, just plain white,
Blinding people.
Finally the fog goes away, leaving a sunny day.
The birds fly around, the bees come out of their hive,
And kids play outside all day.
No-one in the town is inside.

More Learning From the Pacifica Experience

The necklace was hard to make. I had to ask a person for help and then I got the hang of it. -Angus

We learnt a dance. It was funny because we had to shake to one side. -Nina

At the Pacifica Centre we learned the different names for drums. The boys had to do crazy legs when we were dancing. -Deakyn

The weaving was fun and easy. We folded the flax across and then we folded the other side over. Millie asked me for help, and I only did two crosses for her. Then we went to the mama who used scissors to shred the ends. -Tina

At the Pacifica Centre we wove a necklace with flax. One of the people helped start mine. Then I did the rest. We did one bit at a time. My necklace is really cool. -Mariah

Seeing the umu was different to what I thought it was. It had bricks surrounding a hole. It was an unusual smell. - Alicia

Family Traditions

Earlier in the term we read a big book called Friendly Families. We found out about some interesting family traditions.
We used Kid Pix to illustrate a statement about our own family traditions.
